Mixed media on panel
150 × 150 cm
Layers of paper, pigment, and found materials explore themes of memory and impermanence.
Memory Layers exemplifies Yuki Tanaka's distinctive approach to mixed media, combining traditional Japanese papermaking techniques with contemporary materials and methods. The work builds upon itself in layers—paper, pigment, wax, found materials—creating a palimpsest of texture and meaning.
Tanaka's work draws on the Japanese concept of mono no aware, the pathos of things, embracing the beauty inherent in impermanence and the passage of time. Fragments of text, glimpsed through translucent layers, suggest stories half-remembered, connections partially revealed.
The square format references both the traditional Japanese folding screen and the contemporary digital frame, bridging centuries of artistic practice.
