A contemplative figure in Carrara marble speaks to presence and absence.
Silent Witness represents Alessandro Romano's continued mastery of the marble tradition that has defined Italian sculpture for centuries. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, the figure emerges from the stone with startling presence—a witness to time passing, to histories unfolding.
Romano studied with master carvers in Pietrasanta before developing his distinctive contemporary voice. His work honors the past while speaking directly to present concerns: vulnerability, resilience, the enduring human need for connection.
The surface treatment varies across the sculpture—highly polished in places, rough-hewn in others—creating a conversation between finish and raw material, completion and potential.
